Individual Therapy

For adults experiencing difficulties with anxiety, depression, relationships, or sexual concerns. An integration of exploration of the past, as needed, with a variety of therapeutic approaches to address present day concerns.

For couples on the brink of divorce and differing in their level of commitment to repairing their marriage. Lasting for 1-5 sessions, Discernment Counseling is a specialized approach uniquely tailored to accommodate mixed agenda couples—when one spouse wants repair and the other is leaning towards divorce. Focuses on determining a clear direction for the marriage without pressure to engage in relationship therapy or initiate divorce.

Education and Background

Dr. Herwitz holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University. Her research and clinical practice have consistently focused on psychological development occurring during major life milestones in adulthood: profession, family of origin relationships, romantic partnership, marriage, parenthood, retirement, and the complex decision of whether—and how—to remain together or separate.

Her doctoral research, Parenting Against the Odds: Psychological Mindedness Among Teenage Mothers, was published in 2008 and launched her longstanding interest in human development.

She completed advanced training in the RIE (Resources for Infant Educarers) approach and was the first clinician to facilitate RIE Parent–Infant Observation and Discussion Groups in New York City. She published Educaring and Attachment Theory in 2006, exploring how attachment-based thinking applies to the practical work of raising young children.

For more than two decades, Dr. Herwitz has been mentored by Phil Stutz, co-creator of The Tools. This ongoing mentorship continues to inform her work with highly accomplished, creative adults looking for accountability, personal growth and meaningful change.

She served as President of The Women's Mental Health Consortium from 2017 to 2022. Earlier in her career, Dr. Herwitz worked in fashion and tabletop design and spent several years as a professional chef in Italy and throughout the United States—backgrounds that contribute to her respect for mastery, discipline, and the creative process.

She is frequently consulted at relationship decision points—particularly when one partner is uncertain about remaining married and seeks a thoughtful, non-coercive space to clarify next steps before engaging in couples therapy or proceeding with divorce.

Dr. Herwitz maintains a private practice on the Upper East Side of New York City and works exclusively by referral from trusted colleagues, physicians, attorneys, and current and former patients. She lives in New York with her husband; their three adult children also live and work in the city.
